August 27, 2021
Dear Forest Hills Families,
The crisis involving a lack of school bus drivers is not isolated to Forest Hills or even Michigan; it is a nationwide problem. Fewer and fewer people want to do this job. We are competing with the private sector for individuals with the type of commercial license needed to operate a school bus. School bus driver positions are unique in the hours and type of work. We are still seeking more drivers to help us alleviate the current issue of route suspensions.
As a result, effective Monday, August 30, 2021, through Friday, September 10, 2021, your student’s bus route will NOT be operating for both the morning and afternoon. The following bus numbers will not be operating:
- Bus #64 – Collins Elementary

FHPS Busing
FHPS was aware of the driver shortage prior to the start of this school year. The shortage dates back to February 2021, when the first round of bus routes were cancelled.
Despite detriment to Forest Hills families, a bus driver contract failed to be successfully signed.
The failure to secure a contract directly caused the “rolling blackouts” in student bussing. This led to chaotic arrivals and departures, inconsistent route times and a continuous shortage of drivers.
There have been ongoing and excessive bus route cancellations throughout the FHPS district.
FHPS has offered some of the lowest bus driver compensation.
The Recall Petition was filed on September 15, 2021.
On September 17, 2021, FHPS conducted an email blast advertising a bus driver hiring fair to be held on September 18, 2021.
The job fair resulted in the hiring of nine new bus drivers. As of October 18, 2021, two of those new hires are active drivers and seven are currently in training.
In comparison to the 17 other school districts within Kent County that offer bussing, Forest Hills Public Schools has the highest number of bus cancellations to date.
There have been over 100 routes cancelled during the 2021/22 school year (roughly, 20 cancelled routes per week) and that number continues to rise each week.
This is a stark contrast to the district with the next highest bus route cancellations. They have had 2 routes cancelled for a duration of 2 days this school year.
Yes, there is a nationwide shortage of bus drivers. Yes, FHPS district was aware of this issue in 2020. Yes, FHPS bus drivers received the lowest compensation and incentives in the state. Why was this issue not addressed before the 2021-2022 school year? Why did FHPS not provide competitive wages reflecting those of the surrounding districts? Why did the Bus Driver Job Fair not occur BEFORE September 18, 2021? See article in Mlive about the job fair.
Bus Driver Compensation
While other school districts, offer competitive wages for Bus Drivers, FHPS has failed to attract drivers with competitive wages. According to FPHS website, the wage is $15 per hour (there was a wage increase, however, we’re unaware of what that was at this time as the district website hadn’t been updated to reflect the change)*. We are aware that there are 9 new hires with 7 working through the training process and 2 already driving! Training takes 6 weeks or longer. New hires were hired at $.50 more per hour than veteran drivers. Veteran bus drivers did not receive a sign-on bonus like the new hires. FHPS bus drivers do not have access to district health insurance as workload is kept below full time status making bus drivers ineligible to receive benefits.
*FHPS has published updated bus driver compensation info as 11/01/2021 reflecting $17.75 starting pay.
